This is the first painting of my blue series “And the waves…” This series is about the expression of emotions from family matters of mental health and death of a loved one. Blue can be a happy and calm color or the color of sadness. Ying and Yang. And in the same vain, the ocean waves can be calming or treacherous. I love the beach and the ocean so the association of waves of emotions and waves of the ocean was a strong connection.
This paint was the beginning’s of the waves of emotion being stirred by the emotional feelings of my families troubles. This painting was painted on an existing painting. The bands of blue consuming the existing painting like the the waves of the ocean overtaking a swimmer, pulling them under.
The blue is a comforting calm color but is in contrast to the emotion of this painting.

I am influenced by the color field painters, Rothko, Still, and Frankenthaler ….

I am deeply inspired by Andy Warhol. Warhol was inspired by celebrities and pop culture icons. In the series “POP PORTRAITS”, a nod to Warhol’s silk screen portraits, I created a collection of portraits of POP culture icons that I thought were cool. Bowie is an Icon of cool and creativity- in music, art and fashion. I wanted to show a different version of his Aladdin Sane Album cover - which in this take, really shows more of the personality of Bowie’s character.

People ask me why I paint in different styles, abstract, realistic and pop art. I said “ If I painted in just one style I’d get bored and stagnant and I feel it would show up in my paintings. So I switch up my styles after I feel that the present series of paintings has gone as far as it can go. Then when I’m finished with this second style/series of paintings, I return to the first style with a fresh approach. A new set of eyes. Growth happens.
